Women’s rights in Libya during and after Gaddafi: Women’s rights lost in tribal struggle?

I argue that although Gaddafi’s oppressive regime was unsustainable, the transition from it cannot be seen as a democratic shift towards a more liberal structure of society. More than anything, it brought about new coalitions with the aim to control natural resources. Therefore, it cannot be seen as a liberating factor for Libyan women as portrayed in mainstream media.
