Hi!
I’m Kata and I have always wanted to be a journalist. Except for the time when I dreamt of becoming an actress or a singer but considering my vocal skills, I don’t mind that this vanished into my box of unfulfilled dreams.
My passion for words and storytelling has never stopped. Regardless of what I did full time, I have always been writing. Be it travel, international relations or anything related to Spain.
My Studies
I studied International Relations. Back in the days it was considered to be a field for students who had good grades and language skills but absolutely no idea what they wanted to do with their lives. They only wanted to understand the world. Well, this described me quite accurately.
An exchange year in Germany and the student organization AEGEE opened up the world for me. These were so important that I decided to study abroad again. This is how I ended up in Spain studying Peace, Conflict and Development studies after finishing my BA studies in Hungary. Even though I have not become a “new Gandhi”, I still have some world changing aspirations that manifest in company volunteering days and coordinating and communicating company sustainability efforts.
My Jobs
While doing an internship for a cultural relations NGO in Budapest, I found myself waking up in the morning formulating sentences in my head for an article I wrote for the news outlet of the organization on world affairs. This internship enabled me to express my creative self by interviewing lecturers and writing stories in English.
My journalism journey continued during my next stop in Berlin working for an NGO with a similar profile. This place was a little more chaotic than the one in Budapest but we embraced that chaos creatively with the team. We came up with the idea of covering embassy events for the organization’s online magazine, Berlin Global, besides writing about upcoming cultural events in the city.
My first “serious” job took me to the Austrian Embassy in Budapest to the diverse and sometimes also chaotic world of a consular department. At this point I am not sure if chaos attracts me or the other way around. The favorite part of my job was news monitoring for the press department. However, after two years I realized that the world of diplomacy is just too formal for me and I wanted to be more entrepreneurial.
This brought me to the private sector; into the world of leadership advisory, where I help clients both from the public and social sectors to find them new leaders. Next to my day-to-day job I have been devoted to follow my real passion and work as a freelance content writer covering travel, culture and sustainability.
